What the view shows

Reading the greenhouse-gas emissions declared by plants and the coverage limits of the register.

Of the 1,242 plants subject to E-PRTR declaration, only 14 (1.1%) report a greenhouse-gas declaration specifically for 2024, compared with 701 (56.4%) that declare ammonia. Together, these 14 plants declare 1,505.8 tonnes of methane and 0.13 tonnes of nitrous oxide, equal to 40,693 tonnes of CO2 equivalent (GWP100 AR6: CH₄×27, N₂O×273). Part of the gap is regulatory: the mandatory declaration threshold for methane is 100 tonnes a year, ten times the ammonia threshold — a level that most farms, even large ones, do not reach on their own.

For the other 1,228 plants the register reports no methane or nitrous oxide values for 2024: the plants may fall below the individual mandatory declaration threshold, or the data may not yet have been transmitted. The view uses the most recent dataset available (EEA v16, February 2026). Coverage of the dataset for this variable is therefore limited to just over 1% of plants subject to declaration and does not allow for an exhaustive picture of the sector's greenhouse-gas emissions.
