What the view shows
Reading the distribution of animals by municipality and species.
This view shows the number of animals per municipality, not the number of farms: the same BDN (National Livestock Database) source, read at a different level from Farms Distribution. The selection is limited to one species at a time, because the average size of a farm varies considerably between species: a poultry farm averages thousands of animals, a cattle or sheep-and-goat farm a few dozen or hundred. Aggregating species into a single bubble would therefore not allow a like-for-like comparison.
Comparing the two views reveals a consistent pattern: for every species, the top 10 municipalities account for a larger share of the national animal total than their share of farms. For Pigs the top 10 municipalities concentrate 11.4% of animals against 4.1% of farms; for Sheep and Goats, 8.5% against 2.6%; for Cattle, 5.7% against 3.1%; for Poultry, 13.2% against 6.8%. This indicates that the farms present in the top-ranked municipalities are, on average, larger. The number of farms, considered without the animal-headcount figure, does not fully describe the territorial concentration of production.
